Dicey Dungeons is a deck-building, turn based roguelike designed and developed by Terry Cavanagh, creator of games like VVVVVV and Super Hexagon.
The original game was based on a prototype made for the game jam 7DRL (Seven Day Roguelike) in 2018. The concept was based on Dream Quest, a game made by Peter Whalen.
The game is made with Haxe programming language using the OpenFL software framework.
In Dicey Dungeons, you play as one of six fighters, all participating in the game show Dicey Dungeons, with the sole goal of the game being to travel through six floors of a randomly generated dungeon in order to win your heart's desire.
The floors will have two to four enemies, with at least one enemy standing in the way between you and the next floor. In order to go down a floor, you'll need to move your character to the floor's exit. While defeating all the enemies isn't required, you'll earn experience and a coin each time you defeat an enemy, as well as gain access to chests and shops that will help you beat more enemies.
In order to fight enemies, you roll dice at the start of your turn which you use in the various pieces of equipment that you get throughout the dungeon. Taking damage charges your Limit Break, which allows you to perform a skill specific to your character.
Collecting items within chests and buying items at the shops with coins will grant you more items, and defeating enemies will grant you experience equal to the level of the enemy you've defeated. Leveling up will fully heal your character, make them more powerful, as well as grant them rewards like extra dice.
This game rewards both identifying strong equipment loadouts and strategies to use against your enemies as well as how well you can handle the luck of your dice rolls. Proper dice manipulation and equipment usage is required to beat the bosses at the end(s) of the Dicey Dungeons.
The game was first released on Windows, macOS, and Linux on August 13, 2019, with a Nintendo Switch port released on December 15, 2020, an Xbox One and Series X|S port released on November 11, 2021, an iOS and Android mobile port released on July 7, 2022, and a PlayStation 4 and 5 port released on February 6, 2023.
Additionally, a limited physical edition of Dicey Dungeons has been sold for the Nintendo Switch via the distributor and publisher Super Rare Games, starting on September 22, 2022.
